Training: Video Messaging

Film It are currently offering tailor-made classes in using video messaging with

'hard to reach' client groups.

What is video messaging training?
Video message training teaches professionals/practitioners how to use digital video cameras with their clients to create personal messages which are planned, filmed and burned onto DVD.
The messages can be:

  • for individuals;
  • for groups;
  • as part of prisoner-child/family relationship work;
  • as part of victim/offender restorative justice programmes;
  • as permanent records for families of terminally ill young people;
  • as a means of communication between family members to help solve disputes;
  • as a means of engaging young people attending YIPs and YOTs;
  • as care guidance for professionals working with vulnerable young people;
  • as part of family group conferencing;

The messages can be in any style, from a talking head to something dramatised, different locations can be used, outdoors or indoors, sets and backdrops can be made by the participants.

Why video messaging?
Film-It has worked extensively with young people, people in prison, across the justice system, in mental health settings and in the arts. Our experience has repeatedly shown that young people, in particular, feel very comfortable using and speaking to cameras: it is a medium of choice; one they understand.

‘ I like talking to the camera, I’ve got some control, it don’t talk back and I can see what I‘ve done.’ Darren, 17.
